Three Tips For Success From Mike Eruzione

1980. The Cold War.  It was a time of great tension between the United States and the Soviet Union.  Along came a hockey team that revived the spirit of our nation. The Russian Team had beaten all the best PROFESSIONAL teams in the world and had rolled the U.S. amateur team just before the Olympic Games by a score of 10-3.

Now, in Lake Placid, the U.S. team turned the tables and stunned the Soviets with an improbable 4-3 victory.   I had the opportunity to see the captain of that team, Mike Eruzione, at the Keller Williams Family Reunion this week.

Eruzione scored the winning goal in that game which led to announcer Al Michaels now famous words, “Do you believe in Miracles?  Yes!” 

Eruzione shared a few principles that keyed this historic victory—and of course—they serve us well in real estate too.  

  1. “I’ll be your coach but I won’t be your friend,” Coach Herb Brooks told the team when they were first assembled.   And he kept that promise for the rest of his life. Don’t we all need someone who will tell us the truth when we need to hear it?  Someone who cares enough to be candid when necessary?   A great coach or even peer partner can make a difference in your business and your life.
  2. “If you don’t want to be part of this team, leave now,” Brooks also told them. It’s about commitment right?   How committed are you to your success in 2012?  Are you willing to do what it takes to be a champion in your business?
  3. “Everyone on the team has to be on the same page,” Eurzione said of the hockey team’s success.   Is the real estate office you are in—in line to help you hit your goals?  Are they providing the tools and systems necessary for you to go for the Gold in 2012?   If not, how will you get there?
